People sometimes complain it was unfair for God to condemn others for Adam's sin. Not only are they ignoring their own sin, they are forgetting that if one man's misdeed brought trouble for others then another man's good deed can bring blessing to others. There is a deliberate similarity between Adam's role and Christ's, but there are also great differences. It was a 'trespass' that brought sin and death - humanity failing to fulfil its obligation to obey God. By contrast, God was under no obligation to show mercy - it is a free gift from the goodness of his heart. Man sinned against a good God, but grace is shown to foul, guilty rebels. Only one sin brought condemnation but grace takes account of many sins. Death reigned through sin, but grace reigns unto eternal life - believer, you reign over death, and your body will rise for you are more than a conqueror through him who loved you. Thus the great power of human sin is eclipsed by the greater grace of God. How do the gifts of grace come to us? In verse 17 Paul refers to 'the free gift of righteousness'. It is when Christ's righteousness is credited to us that all the rest follows. So we have a choice - remain in Adam? or be represented by Christ? Christ offers himself in the gospel, and 'whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved'.
