Pergamos was the capital city of Asia until the close of the 1st century. It was given over to the worship of Greek idols in which Satan's presence was very evident. These are the conditions under which the Pergamos church existed. The "Pergamos Age" existed between A.D 312. to A.D. 606 Christianity spread quickly throughout the known world by the evangelism of the Ephesus Church and through the persecution of the Smyrna Church. When Constantine became emperor, he made Christianity the state religion: He had a vision of the cross in the sky "In this sign conquer." Constantine believed that if he embraced Christianity, he would be able to conquer his enemies. He accepted the Christian faith and became its defender and protector. He issued an edict to tolerate Christianity and made it the state religion. As a result of this the church began to compromise its standards by adopting pagan practices in their worship; therefore, one compromise led to another. The acceptance of pagan practices robbed the church of its fire and evangelistic fervor.
