Worship marked the birth of our Lord Jesus. The angel's message was the start. The heavenly messenger was feared until he said, "Do not be afraid", and gave the reason - a Saviour for men "given to you". Our experience of meeting God's glory is similar. Shepherds were at the bottom of the social ladder; but God disregards our social distinctions - he alone is to be worshipped. The angelic host gave praise to the Creator they knew and loved, and to the Father who had sent him on a mission of mercy. "There is joy among the angels of God over one sinner who repents." There was little splendour in a child born in poverty, but the angels saw the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. They had followed the war of fallen humanity against God, and had served those he had called in his grace to be heirs of salvation. At last the promised Saviour had come! The shepherds went. They chose to do so; faith is always a free choice although it results from the the Spirit's work in us. They went because they believed; they did not go to find out. It is when we believe the gospel that we experience its reality. They witnessed the truth of what had been told them; and they witnessed to others. They worshipped. They echoed the praise of the angels, giving glory to God for what they had seen and heard.
