The story of Isaac gives many pictures of our Lord Jesus. Long awaited, dearly beloved, delivered up to death, and received back from the dead: these phrases describe Abraham and Isaac, but much more they describe God the Father and His Dear Son our Savior!
Abraham had faith that all God's promises through Isaac would be fulfilled, even if God had to raise Isaac from the dead. And what Abraham believed by faith was vindicated when God raised up our Lord Jesus from the grave and fulfilled all our hopes and all His promises in Him!
Because all his hopes rested in Isaac, Abraham gave to him all that he possessed. So too the Scriptures tell us the Lord Jesus is heir to all things.
Think of it: the second person of the Trinity incarnate in human flesh owns the whole world, it being given to Him by God the Father.
It is striking how often Christ's reign over all things is coupled with His salvation of His people. In Hebrews and Colossians and John's Gospel, as well as in the Old Testament, Christ's salvation and His absolute reign over all things are intertwined.
Peter declares Him to be our Prince and our Savior, granting repentance and forgiveness.
How amazing that one day we shall see Him in the flesh, like unto us His brethren, taking that reign literally before our very eyes.
No doubt salvation is coupled with reign in Christ because the reign of Christ by itself is no good news. Were His people not redeemed and declared righteous by His obedience and blood, we would be consumed in the judgment and righteousness of His absolute reign.
But because He has saved us first, His reign is safe for all His people! Indeed, we shall reign with Him!
