This advent season let's begin at the end. Not at the manger, but at the second coming. Christ's future appearing should be big in our minds and hearts. Far from viewing Christ's return as a source of dread, Paul describes it as "our blessed hope." What a motivation it provides for holy living to know the plan of God in the coming of Christ's glory! We not only have a plan to embrace but a person to meet! He is coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. Advent begins with the eschaton: Christ's ultimate victory and eternal reign. When we begin at the end, Advent startles us in just the right way: jolting us out of comfortable Christianity and into deeper devotion. Martin Luther had only two days on his calendar: this day and that day! That's how God's grace works. It saves us and then it trains and motivates us to be godly and gracious people in this present age, zealous for good works, as we look for the appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us. Christ's future return shapes our lives in the here and now!
