Is it biblical or tradition? We explore topics: church services, the sinner’s prayer, closing eyes and bowing head for prayer, saying "in Jesus name, Amen", sex before marriage and communion.
I. Church services -First Church Service: Exodus 33:8-10; NT Church Service: Acts 20:6-8.
II. The Sinner’s Prayer -Roots in Reformation, culminated with Bill Bright and Billy Graham -Understanding the ideas in Romans 3:3 before "accepting Jesus" -Doesn't have to be "the sinner's prayer" format
III. Closing eyes, Bowing Head and Closing Eyes in Prayer -These practices keep distractions limited, show respect for God and focus the heart
IV. Praying "in Jesus name" -"in Jesus name" from John 14:13-14; Eph. 5:20; Col. 3:17
V. Using "Amen" -means “so be it” -1/2 the uses in the OT are from Deut. as God's people agree with His curse on sin. -Every NT Epistle ends with “amen” often being in agreement with pronouncing blessings on God’s people. -Using it shows agreement with God's pronouncing righteous judgment or blessings on us
VI. Pre-Marital Sex -Absolutely Forbidden: 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 -STD’s, unwanted pregnancies and emotional scarring -C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity's" chapter 6: sexual intercourse outside marriage is trying to isolate one kind of union. Not to isolate the pleasure of sex anymore than tasting food without swallowing -Gen. 1:26 Humans are to commune in marriage as God communes in His Persons of the Trinity.
VII. Communion. -1 Corinthians 11:26-29 -"unworthily manner" not about how much we've sinned -We'll never be worthy, only Jesus -Instead how receptive were we to the H.S.? Producing fruit of the Spirit
