This sermon contrasts the Old (Mosaic) Covenant with the New Covenant. Hagar was a slave woman. Sarah was a free woman. Hagar bore a son by human effort (according to the flesh) while Sarah bore a son by the power of God. Hagar was cast out with her son while Sarah and her son remained in the family. Hagar's son received no inheritance while Sarah's son received all the inheritance. Hagar represents the Old Covenant while Sarah represents the New Covenant.
Hagar (the Old Cov) produces children (Judaism) through law keeping. Whereas, the NC produces children (Body of Christ) by grace through faith in Christ.
The Old Covenant bears children in bondage to legalism while the Gospel of Grace bears children who live in the freedom of the New Covenant.
The children of the OC have no inheritance (salvation), while children of the NC enjoy the inheritance of justification and assurance. Application = Cast out the Old Covenant and all the Legalism it produces! • The basis of my standing before God is the person and work of Christ, not law-keeping. • I depend on the power of God and blessings of the Gospel to grow in holiness.
