John Knox (1514-1572) was the outstanding Scottish reformer and - like Hugh Latimer - a bold preacher. Patrick Hamilton and George Wishart preceded him but they were both martyred as younger men. In God's providence Knox lived, and even though he was able to spend only the last 12 or 13 years of his life in Scotland, he nevertheless established Reformation doctrine in the 1560 Scots Confession, reformed the worship of God by introducing the Book of Common Order (modelled on the Genevan pattern of worship which he has observed during his stay there), and reformed the church by introducing the First Book of Discipline which established Presbyterian government and order.
