Saul of Tarsus is a good example to use when we think about what converting to Christ means. That is not because his experience was vivid, but because its results are obvious. For many people conversion is a gradual process; but every convert is a 'new person in Christ'. It helps us to think about what did not change as well as what did change. He continued to worship the God of his fathers, believe the scriptures, and hope in his promise. Converting to Christ never does away with that; rather it enhances it. He also continued to have a high regard for the moral demands of the scripture; the true convert always has - conversion without repentance is false. the true convert also communicates with God in prayer and the scripture; without that there is no relationship. The main change was in Saul's attitude to Jesus of Nazareth. When he realised who Jesus was he was convicted of sin in opposing him. That is part of conversion - our enmity to God and Christ becomes a source of sorrow to us. This change will lead us to forego our rights and be willing to suffer for the sake of Christ and his people; that was true of Saul, who spent his life in the service of Christ's church. His existing hope in the resurrection became the hope of Christ's return. That is the goal of every true convert - 'that blessed hope'. His 'discovery' of Jesus changed the religious atmosphere in which he lived. Like him, we may have grown up in a demanding atmosphere, where religious achievement was the goal (and that makes us demanding towards other people). When he found Jesus he realised salvation was a gift, not a demand. That brings us peace and joy, and his love to us kindles in us love for other.
