The proposition of this message is that David's deficiencies are recorded to make you aware of, and save you from, your deficiencies. David learned polygamy not from the scriptures but more from corrupt compromized religious culture. It proved disastrous as you know. His sin was more naive ignorance than highhanded rebellion. Leviticus 4 anticipates sins of ignorance. This message unfolds as follows: First, zeal for God is usually mixed with ignorance. This ignorance is forgiveable but blameworthy. This ignorance is dangerous. Note that in close connection with David's polygamy is the record of the zealous, albeit ignorant, moving of the Ark of the covenant on a cart, a mode first done by chastized Philistines. Second, we must scrutinize ourselves in our generation. Second Timothy describes our culture as one of perilously misplaced affections. In other words you live in perilous times and you are far more suseptible to compromizing with this decadent culture than you realize. Curious as it may seem I am using this message as an introduction to a study on Colossians, those Colossians made a good start in Christian experience but were still quite susecptible to zealous will worship.
