'As the apostle says to Timothy, so also he says to everyone, 'Give yourself to reading.' He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers, and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.'

I didn't have a good church so my two pastors were authors - David Martyn Lloyd-Jones and A W Pink. There is a lot made of the title Knowing God by J I Packer. But in holding out God in His awful majesty and greatness - few books are equal to Pink's. (obviously Stephen Charnock was the master of this subject) I was so impressed with these words I memorized them. The god of the average pulpit no more resembles the Sovereign of Holy Writ than the dim flickering of a candle, the brightness of the midday sun. Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) was born in Great Britain and immigrated to the U.S. to study at Moody Bible Institute. He pastored churches in Colorado, California, Kentucky, and South Carolina before becoming an itinerant Bible teacher in 1919. He returned to his native land in...
