Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the Gospel of Luke which in the first two chapters contains the well-loved parallel narratives of the annunciations and births of John the Baptist and our Lord Jesus. In Luke 1:5-25 we learn from the appearance of the Angel Gabriel to Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist.
The passage begins with a barren couple, who are advanced in years and childless, and a barren nation which is under Roman oppression and hasn’t heard a Word from the Lord in centuries. Gabriel brings good news of God’s intention to end the barrenness of both this family and that of Israel. For those of you who were with us through the book of Ruth do you see the parallels? God provides a redeemer for an empty childless woman (Naomi) who will also advance His plan of redemption for His barren people.
Zacharias, however, does not respond in faith to this answer to his prayers for his wife and for his people. Before we are too hard on him, however, we should recognize that all of us (even those who are righteous in Christ) sometimes struggle with doubt.
