When David was restored as King, a final rebellion took place, led by Sheba, a son of Belial. All of Judah stayed with David, and the rebellion was crushed.
This text prefigures the millenial reign of Christ and Satan's futile rebellion at the end of time.
The Reign of our Lord Jesus will be a glorious thing. He will come in power and all the world will be subject to His rule. Psalm 2 mentions three aspects of His victory: He will have spiritual victory over all the saints who trust in Him. He will have a political victory over all the kings who are wise to submit to Him. All the rest will be broken with His rod of iron.
The blessings of the Millenial Reign of Christ are indescribable. There will be peace and prosperity and safety and healing and righteousness such as the world has never seen. His rule will be that utopia that dreamers so greatly desire.
And yet at the end, Satan will find a unnumberable host of wicked men to follow him in rebellion against Christ's noble reign.
This truth reminds us that wickedness can never be fully removed by wise laws or crushing violence against it. Only the Redeemed whose hearts have been changed by the saving Grace of God will stay with the Lord Jesus no matter what - all other men will rise up against Him sooner or later - no matter how submitted they may appear to be.
Praise God, the Saints will cleave to Christ like all the men of Judah did to King David - not because of our own works, but because He has changed us.
The New Covenant was described in Jeremiah 31 as the solution to our inability to keep the law. Our Savior Himself keeps us in His Covenant. His Blood cleanses His people forever.
