By far, the most sensational of the so-called “sign gifts” is the gift of tongues. It has been heralded by the modern-day charismatic movement as THE evidence of the ‘baptism of the Holy Ghost.' It is an experience that is highly sought by thousands of sincere but misguided believers. In violation of the clear teaching of the New Testament, most of the modern-day revival of tongues is used for self-edification. The temporary purpose for tongues – a sign of judgment to unbelieving Jews – has been largely ignored.
But what about the other miraculous “sign gifts”? In particular, what about the gift of prophecy, since Paul told the Corinthians that he would rather that they ‘prophesy' than speak in tongues (1 Cor. 14:1-5, 39)? Is there any sense in which this gift remains scripturally valid for today?
The Church of Jesus Christ must get back to “sola Scriptura.” We leave ourselves wide open to Satanic deception, confusion, and division, when we look for “signs” and make allowance for ongoing divine revelation through spiritual gifts. Those who do so are placing themselves back under the Old Covenant. Christ has already come! He is the final word! No further word for the redemption of man is needed to live godly in this dispensation. Let us seek to authoritatively proclaim the “faith once [and for all] delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).
