Solomon begins his leadership of Israel as their third king. The chapter opens with David's final charge to Solomon and his brother Adonijah trying to assert himself to that position. The fact of Solomon being God's choice is well known by Adonijah and those who choose to follow him, making their threat to Solomon's throne a rebellion against God's revealed plan. That being the case, Solomon rightly deals immediately with this challenge to his throne.
The scenario ultimately was an opportunity for Solomon's ability and courage to lead to be on display to the nation. His courage will come out of his commitment to God's will and word. Courage and obedience go hand in hand then, as now.
Observations from this study include: 1. The mark of the courage of a man is seen in his obedience to the Lord. 2. God's promises are realized in the context of obedience. 3. God's promise to establish the throne of David stands - even while Israel remains under judgment. 4. God is sovereign. 5. Rebellious men sin against mercy. 6. Justice delayed is not justice cancelled. 7. Sinful men are insensitive to the reality of judgment. 8. God is faithful in and through it all.
