Across our land, there is both fear and loathing, and great rejoicing, at the election of our new president. Some say they are in fear at what might happen to them, while others breathe a sigh of relief that salvation has come at last.
In the past, it is true that every president we loved has somehow disappointed us, and every president we loathed has turned out not nearly so bad as we feared.
The question is, has God had mercy upon our land by giving us Trump as president, or has He done so as a judgment against us?
Many claim that Trump will make better appointments to the Supreme Court. How soon we forget of the bad appointments that Reagan and Bush made! Those appointments were the votes needed to usher in and uphold abortion, Obamacare, eminent domain abuses, etc.
No doubt Mr. Trump will be better for us on some issues, and worse for us on others. He is a pragmatist, and therefore not guided by moral principles. He has embraced authoritarian methods, and surrounded himself with authoritarian advisers like Giuliani, Bolton, and Gingrich.
There is legitimate fear in what an authoritarian Trump administration will do with profiling, which always harms the innocents among the targeted classes, often the poor and minorities. The American presidency has more power now than at any time in our history, and it has already been greatly abused by Trump's predecessors.
God may use Mr. Trump to accomplish good for our country, or He may use him to judge us for our great wickedness. King Saul and King Jehu are two examples in Scripture where wicked men did some good, but also harmed their country.
But our King Jesus can be counted upon to bless His people!
