Deception, intimidation, and discouragement. Those are three of Satan's main weapons. But we can overcome when we recognise the lie. We see that in the story of David and Goliath. God's enemy focused on human strength - but so did the people of Israel, and that is why they fled. David saw things differently. He realised that defying God brings God's punishment, so instead of fearing Goliath he reckoned Goliath was doomed. This is a picture of genuine spiritual warfare. When we focus on the strength of our sin, or the power of Satan, then we give up the fight. But that is to buy into a lie. 'Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world' (1 John 4:4). The blood of Christ can make the foulest sinner clean, and 'the God of peace will bruise Satan under your feet shortly' (Romans 16:20). God will not allow his glory to be trampled in the mud for ever; he will arise and plead his own cause - he has always done so. And he will not use human strength - David's sling and stones were all he used. So - whether the problem is our own sin, unconverted family, or attacks on the gospel - never give up so long as Christ is on the throne of heaven.
