Heidelberg Catechism Questions LORD'S DAY 36 99. What is required in the third commandment? A. That we must not, by cursing, perjury or rash swearing, profane or abuse the name of God, nor by silence or consent be partakers of these horrible sins in others. That we use the holy name of God with fear and reverence, so that He may be rightly confessed and worshipped by us, and be glorified in all our words and works.
100. Is then the profaning of God's name by swearing and cursing so grievous a sin that His wrath is kindled against those also who seek not, as much as in them lies, to hinder and forbid the same? A. It undoubtedly is, for there is no sin greater or more provoking to God, than the profaning of His name; and therefore He has commanded this sin to be punished with death.
LORD'S DAY 37 101. But may we not swear by the name of God in a religious manner? A. Yes, either when the magistrates demand it, or when necessity requires us to confirm the truth to the glory of God and the safety of our neighbor. Such an oath is founded on God's word, and therefore was justly used by saints in both the Old and New Testaments.
102. May we swear by the saints or any other creature? A. No, for the lawful oath is calling upon God, as the only one who knows the heart, that He will bear witness to the truth and punish me if I swear falsely, and this honor is due to no creature.
