The name of the book is Ruth but it is as much an account of the man Boaz as it is of Ruth or even Naomi. In this chapter, we are introduced to this relative of Naomi who is related through her late husband, Elimelech. As we will see, Boaz is upright, honorable, and is in a unique position in regards to Ruth and Naomi. Boaz is a potential redeemer. That is, Boaz may be able to restore what had been lost. We must remember that the name of Elimelech was about to be lost in the nation of Israel. Both of his heirs were dead and there were not going to be any more sons born to Naomi. Elimelech's inheritance and place was in danger of vanishing. But, in God's gracious providence, there was one who could make things right. In one of the most beautiful love stories ever told, Boaz sees Ruth and takes care of her and provides for her. Of course, this is not the most beautiful love story ever told. The most beautiful love story is the one of the distant son of Boaz, our kinsman-redeemer the Lord Jesus Christ. Like Boaz, He is righteous, merciful, and is the only one who can restore what was lost. Our inheritance was at risk and we were about to lose everything. But our kinsman-redeemer comes in tenderness and provides for our need. – Pastor Schlegel |
