With regard to the law of Moses, Paul divides the human race into two.1 All are sinners, but some have sinned â€˜without lawâ€™; the rest have sinned â€˜in the lawâ€™ (Rom. 2:12). This is the biblical divide â€“ those â€˜under the lawâ€™, and those â€˜without lawâ€™ (1 Cor. 9:20-21). Those â€˜in the lawâ€™ have the law of God; those â€˜without lawâ€™ do not. Clearly, therefore, the law could not have been given to all men. If it had, Paulâ€™s division would have been utterly meaningless; indeed, nonsensical.
