Summary, Part 3 (final) C. WE BEGIN TO TRULY KNOW OURSELVES ONLY AS WE KNOW GOD. Calvin: We cannot know ourselves until we know God, and we cannot know God until we know ourselves. ACTS 17:28: An inward search for a meaningful life is folly. We never find God without His aid; He reveals Himself to us when He wills. Only the Gospel is truth; thus, it destroys every false thing (2 CORINTHIANS 10:5). JOHN 8:32: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” TO BE CONTINUED NEXT LORD’S DAY.

Summary, Part 2 Our ultimate purpose in life is to know God savingly; that is why He made us. Ignorance of God is not bliss; it is the most essential knowledge we can have. II. WHY SHOULD WE STUDY THE EXISTENCE AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD? A. WE FIND TRUE WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE ONLY AS WE COME TO KNOW GOD. See PROVERBS 9:10 again. True wisdom not only satisfies the intellect but thrills the heart. 1 CORINTHIANS 1:20-21: Do we really think we will come to know anything about God via idols we fashion ourselves? Besides, we don’t know about God until He gives us His wisdom: in other words, until He saves us. Unsaving theology is about as progressive as watching a dog chase his tail. ECCLESIASTES 12:1: God wants preeminence in all things in our lives. Spurgeon: The sooner in life one considers the things of God, the better. B. WE CANNOT BEGIN TO KEEP GOD’S COMMANDMENTS UNTIL WE KNOW GOD. JOHN 14:21 (parallels in DEUTERONOMY 7:9, PSALM 25:14): In both Testaments, we learn that obedience is instrumental to a knowledge of God.

Summary, Part 1 PHILIPPIANS 3:7-11: We bring nothing to the other side of eternity from this side. Of what value are temporal things in the eternal picture? I. WHO SHOULD STUDY THE EXISTENCE AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD? Two types of people: A. THOSE WHO KNOW GOD. In Paul’s final chapter before his execution, he still wanted his Scriptures. The believer never graduates from biblical learning in this life. Theology was once known as the “Queen of the Sciences”: the capstone of all knowledge. PROVERBS 9:10: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” If we don’t know the Lord, we don’t know anything as we should. The only viewpoint that matters is God’s. Under the sun, all knowledge is vanity, no matter how many letters follow the knower’s name. B. THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW GOD. The staunchest atheist is a creation of God, and all his arguments are his own futile attempts to deny the truth that is stamped into his being. Knowing *about* God is much different than knowing God. 2 THESSALONIANS 1:7-9: Knowledge of God without belief in the Gospel will result in the fiercest eternal destruction. On this point, it is important to keep in mind that Satan and his fallen angels have much knowledge of God, and it will not save them in the end.
