Is the Church essential? That question has been on many Christians minds through this pandemic with social isolation and restrictions. We have been meeting together virtually since March, but today was 'Back to Church' Sunday with our doors open for in-person worship. But the question is, 'Why should we return? Do we need local churches? Is the church essential?' Now, these questions are not new, for there were some first-century Christians who were asking the same question. They were 'forsaking the assembling of themselves together' with other believers. They did not see the need to meet with other brothers and sisters in Christ on a regular basis. They got out of the habit of going to Church. SO, why meet. The writer to the Hebrews gives us three reasons in Hebrews 10, each beginning with the words, 'Let us'. 'Let us draw near' to God for the purpose of worshiping Him. While it is possible to worship God alone, there is a special dynamic when we gather together to worship that cannot be experienced alone. Second, 'let us hold fast', that is, we need the encouragement of others to persevere in our faith, and not to give up hope. Third, 'let us consider one another' is something we cannot do in isolation. We need to consider how to spur one another on for love and good works. And we need to consider how to encourage one another as we see the approaching day of Christ's coming. In light of what is happening in our world today, we need to meet together MORE, not less. That's why church IS essential!
