As we take a short break from our journey through the Gospel of John (a well-known and often read portion of the Scriptures), we now turn our attention to an often neglected and obscure portion of God's Word – the Prophesy of Nahum. It was common for the Minor Prophets to be focused upon a particular issue or event and Nahum is no exception. The context of the "burden" of Nahum was the terrifying and seemingly unstoppable Kingdom of Assyria. The Assyrians were vicious warriors and proud enemies of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah. In the time of Nahum, they were the principle opponents of the physical representation of the Kingdom of God on Earth. Everyone expected that the Assyrians would do to Judah what they had already done to Israel: utterly destroy it. From a human perspective, this was a reasonable expectation, but the Lord had another intent. The power, past military success, and plans of the Assyrians would not – could not – stand against the Lord's zeal to preserve His people and defeat the Kingdom of Darkness represented by the Assyrian Empire and the city of Nineveh. The message of Nahum is that the Lord's patience should not be misinterpreted as failure. Rather, that "The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked." – Pastor Schlegel
