Today's passage is one from John's Gospel that is sometimes greatly misunderstood, misrepresented, and taught very badly by many. The Roman Catholic Church misunderstands the intent when the passage speaks of “eating flesh” and “drinking blood” and applies this to one of their sacraments, which is not at all what the passage speaks of. Eating and drinking are metaphors for faith. Jesus takes a spiritual truth that can be elusive and He elucidates it using something very practical and tangible. Hence, easting is a way to understand what saving faith is like.
“Keep the Faith” is a pop culture saying that, in the context of true, saving faith, really says nothing clear about faith. If you have the wrong faith, don't keep it…get rid of it! What you need is true faith in the One who can save you. Our culture has slowly imbibed the mindset that faith in and of itself is a good thing, irrespective of its object. For example, “You've got your faith, and I've got my faith.” But, what we see in the New Testament is that the most important thing about faith is not its intensity or depth, as important as those are, but the object of your faith. What is your faith in? We look today at the foundation of saving faith.
