“ Summary, Part 5 (final) ”
F. A PERSON WHO HAS EMBRACED THE GOSPEL. As long as we seek God through worldly wisdom and religion, we will not find Him (1 CORINTHIANS 1:20-21). He must show us our poverty before we can plead for His riches. He must give us the eyes to see and the ears to hear. The Bible calls the Christian “a new creation”. The Creator makes us who we are. He doesn’t hide while we try to find Him; He makes Himself known to His people at His pleasure. ‘Foolishness’ in verse 21 comes from the Greek word for ‘moron’. And the world indeed believes this, proving the Bible true. When the world treats us with contempt because of Who we follow, we have the hope to go where He went.

“ Summary, Part 4 ”
D. A PERSON WITH A FORGIVEN SOUL. JEREMIAH 31:34 teaches that we don’t know the Lord if we’re not saved. Forgiveness of sins is not the end of salvation. ISAIAH 59:2 tells why we don’t see God: because He separates Himself from our iniquity. JOHN 17:3 defines eternal life: knowledge of God. It is not just mere immortality; it is the life of God in the soul of man. God is intimate only with the forgiven. E. A PERSON WHO SEEKS TO PLEASE GOD BY FAITH. It is impossible to please God without faith (HEBREWS 11:6). The text describes a diligent faith as opposed to the practical unbeliever’s affirmation of God’s existence. Enoch (verse 5) embodied the seeking faith. The true Christian keeps growing because he keeps seeking. He rests on the promise of reward for his diligence. He has hope; the grasping, anticipating character of faith. Does our faith please God?

“ Summary, Part 3 ”
C. A PERSON WITH A TEACHABLE MIND. PROVERBS 2:1-5 ties the infinite value of truth to the value we place on money. Do we seek truth with the same sense of purpose? Do we anticipate it as much? Do we treasure it as much when we receive it? Do we treat it with the same preciousness we treat our money? Does a month without Bible study have the same impact as a month without income? Do we see truth as a means within which to live? In LUKE 10:38-42, note Jesus’ response to Martha’s request to let Mary step away from Him to help her in the kitchen: that Mary desired His fellowship and He wasn’t going to take it away from her. Also note the woman lavishing affection on Jesus in LUKE 7:36-50. The lesson is that He will reveal more of Himself to those who pay attention to Him. In true fellowship, the brethren who love Christ the most will love you the most and will thus tell you the truth the most. JOHN 14:21 states it plainly: “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”

“ Summary, Part 2 ”
B. A PERSON WITH A HUMBLE HEART. ISAIAH 57:15 captures the image of Moses: one who has a contrite and humble spirit, yet who dwells with the high and lofty One. Is it any wonder that the proud are strangers to God? PSALM 138:6 tells us that God discloses Himself to the lowly, but not the proud. Note how Jesus will respond to professing Christians who bring their deeds to the throne of judgment: “I never knew you” (MATTHEW 7:21-23). In EXODUS 33:13, Moses based his plea for understanding on the condition that he had found grace in God’s sight so that, among other things, he would find grace in God’s sight. This is not a circle, it is living faith. He wanted to see God’s ways to better know God: God does what He does because He is what He is. In verses 17-23, we learn that we can only know God derivatively (His “back parts”), not essentially (His “face”) while standing on the rock (Christ).

“ Summary, Part 1 ”
1 CORINTHIANS 1:18-31 illustrates God’s “counter-intuitiveness”: He raises up that which the world does not. While the Jew seeks God by signs and the Greek seeks Him by wisdom, God reveals Himself by what the world considers to be foolishness. III. WHAT QUALITY OF CHARACTER WOULD BENEFIT FROM A STUDY OF THE EXISTENCE AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD? A. A PERSON CONCERNED ABOUT PERSONAL PIETY. Wisdom is only had with a holy reverence for God (PROVERBS 9:10). A fear of the Lord is not a Sunday service attitude. The pious Christian glorifies God in all that he does: obeying His commands and not offending Him. Mere speculative interest in God is no guarantee of faith: “unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” (LUKE 12:48). TITUS 1:16 is not just talking about people who are deceived about God: it yields the principle that knowledge and obedience do not necessarily go hand in hand. Good theologians can be practical atheists, exposing their hearts with their lives. Does our professed faith in Christ preoccupy us with imitating Him? Does it shape our attitude toward sin? Our choices? Do we bear the image of Christ or do we simply bear the title of “Christian”?
