These chapters give us insights into various events that occured during David's reign.
Chapter 21 deals with the misplaced zeal of Saul when he and the army of Israel attacked the Gibeonites who had deceived Joshua into signing a peace treaty with them. Time doesn't alter God's word so the treaty should have been recognized. Under David's authority revenge is granted to the Gibeonites who ask that seven of Saul's sons be put to death.
Chapter 22 is also recorded in our Bibles as Psalm 18. At least 73 of the 150 Psalms are attributed to David. It is a song of praise for God's enabling and delivering David and Israel from their enemies.
Chapter 23 are the last 'formal' words of David. Interestingly enough, in this Psalm David writes of being aware that he was doing so under the inspiration of God. God was using a godly ruler to bring refreshment and encouragement to His people. The chapter concludes with an unfolding of the mighty men who served under David, their positions and profiles of courage.
