This sermon gives an overview and introduction to two of the principle means of grace: baptism and the Lord's Supper, in particular how they are connected to the Old Testament, the kingdom of God, and the covenant of grace. These two sacraments, or gospel ordinances, are directly connected to the Gospel and were personally ordained by Christ. The Passover meal is the OT background of the Lord's Supper. The deliverance of Noah's family from the flood, as well as the deliverance of the Israelites through the Red Sea, are the OT background for Christian baptism. These sacraments are means of grace by which God shows us his power and strengthens our confidence in his promises. They do not produce faith, but repentance and faith must be present for them to be effective in the Christian's life. They are the visible, tangible manifestations of the gospel's saving work in our lives and are a principle means by which the living Christ is ministered to us by the work of the Holy Spirit.
