The pastoral epistles represent a period of transition in the New Testament Church. Paul is the aged apostle writing to Timothy a younger minister. The picture portrayed is not merely the difference in age, but one that reflected the significant change then taking place in the church. The apostolic office and ministry was drawng to a close and following on from it was the establishment of the perpetual office of minister.
In light of the transition Paul recognised the need to give counsel and direction to Timothy, and through him to the wider church, as to their responsibility to the Lord and his truth.
Paul's duty was to hand on what he had been given by revelation from the Lord. Timothy's duty was to hold fast what he had received. It is duty that carries on to this present hour.
