It is one thing to agree on the importance of love in the Christian life; it is another thing to practise it. IT will help if we think about expressions of love both in God and in his people. We see it in all God's dealings from creation to the marriage supper of the Lamb. His saints love him because they have experienced his mercy - love of the love they have found, and awareness that they are now servants of him who loved them. The description in our text may surprise some - 'suffers long' - is love not meant to 'feel good'? This reminds us that genuine Christian love puts others before ourselves, so we must be prepared to suffer, as Christ was. His love led to the incarnation; that made him vulnerable, and going into the world makes us vulnerable. By definition, this love is voluntary, a relinquishing of our rights; but for the Christian it has also regard for Christ's command (John 13:34-35). It is not only a willingness to suffer, but to suffer LONG. We see that in how Christ dealt with his disciples and others. It is the opposite of attitudes common in society, such as: 'I will only do it if it does not cost me'; 'I will dump you if you no longer please me'; 'don't dare criticise me'; 'I will pay you back'. Resentment, or being easily offended is incompatible with this love. The saints love others: for the sake of peace; recognising their failings; aware of God's will and Christ's example. Christ acted as he did because he knew God's loving purpose in salvation; so must we. Christ experienced the contempt, slanders, prejudice, and cruelty that we may meet. He had regard to the coming Judgement (1 Peter 2:21-23), and so should we. Love is then perfected in kindness.
