To know the love of God we know that He sent His only begotten Son. It goes much farther than that. Not only did He send His only Son, but He sent His only Son to die for the sins of the world. God looked every where for a sacrifice and there was none to be found. He sent the one He loved to be that perfect sacrifice. God loved us as much as He loved His only Son. He longed to have a relationship with us but could not as long as we bore our sin. He sent His only Son to take that sin that we might have a relationship with the Father.
