As we come to the close of Moses’ introduction to the law it’s easy to brush aside this last section as mere summary or a footnote. However, following on the previous passage where Moses sternly warned the people about their own potential for turning away from biblical worship of the one, true God, this passage provides a good reminder of the constant need that all people have for one who will teach and instruct in the law. As Moses does this through summary and references forward and back he lays the foundation for listening to the law as it comes to us through a covenant mediator. Further, we are pointed to Jesus Christ who is the final and best instructor in the law because He is the lawgiver and the lawkeeper.
