In science fiction writing, the dream (or nightmare) of being able to plug one's self into a computer in order to download information directly into the brain is a consistent theme. It is easy to understand why. If we were able to do this it is thought that it would have many benefits. It saves time. It means that you don't have to go through the learning process. It means that you can learn more than you could otherwise learn. One could become almost super-human. But there is at least one problem: this is not how we are made. The Creator God has established the means whereby we learn and grow, and the means are much different than what science fiction portrays. We cannot defy this order and expect to grow and learn. And this is certainly true of the Christian life. The Word is the source of nourishment, growth and strength for the Christian.
