The idea of a scapegoat seems very unfair because it is unfair: Blaming an innocent person for someone else's wrong is not fair at all. And yet, on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16) a scapegoat is burdened with the blame of Israel's sin. The good news is that the scapegoat is a symbol of Christ's willing acceptance of our sins onto himself. The innocent is guilted for sinners.
