Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

The apostle John, writing to the people of God who he describes as “little children,” says to them: “And we know that Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.’ (1 Jn. 5:20) God’s people will all be “taught of God.” He will give them “knowledge” and “understanding” so that they might know (be able to distinguish) the true God. To know Him the only way He can be known, in His Son Jesus Christ. Furthermore, to know God, which is to have Him reveal Himself to us in the gospel and in us by His Spirit, is eternal life! Also, to know God in this sense is to love Him and to know that He loved us and gave Himself for us. So what will John say next in closing? “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” (1 Jn. 5:21) Every god, every person and everything that rivals the true God is an idol. All religion and experience prior to God revealing Himself to us through the truth was idolatry. Idolatry is all around us because it is naturally in us. It is always easy for flesh to embrace what can be seen, touched or felt. Thus, idolatry is always a problem, always a danger. It is very subtle since the great idol maker and all his legions of deceivers are “transformed into an angel of light.” “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” (2 Cor. 11:14) When God saves a sinner, He delivers that sinner from the bondage, deception and practice of his former idolatry. As a matter of fact, if He has not delivered us from those old associations, methods, teachings, and practices of them, we are yet bound to them. He does not add the truth of Christ and the worship of His holy Self to that idolatry. His command to His elect is “come ye out from among them.” How can one be a part of, cling to, that which is so dishonoring to the true God and to the Person and work of His Son? (Read 2 Cor. 6:14-18) Paul says of the Thessalonian believers, “ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.” (1 Thess. 1:9) I often see people dabble with the truth for a time but they cannot forsake their idols. They hold fast to the things and persons they love more than the true God. As did Ephraim of whom God said, “Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.” (Hos. 4:17) Let all who truly believe God hear the words: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” Gary Shepard

It is true that I have sin in me, but it is pardoned. God has forgiven me all trespasses. I stand before Him in my Redeemer, Who undertook for me, and I am perfect in Him. The Father chose me in His Son: He looks upon the face of His beloved, and sees me in Him. In Christ He is well pleased, so He is with me! As He loves Christ – He loves me! This is the glorious privilege which by faith I now enjoy. I deny sight and sense, and I believe the Word of God! I adhere strictly to the Word of God concerning me, believing myself to be dead indeed unto sin in Christ, and in Him absolutely freed from guilt and condemnation.

The Father is at peace with me, and He loves me in His son, with the same love with which He loves Christ – His Father and my Father. With this persuasion I go to war with my corruption. They are fighting against everything that is dear and precious to my soul. But having the promised grace of the almighty Savior for my help, I desire to set upon them in His name. I am at war with sin but at peace in Christ!

WHAT IS THE SABBATH?

“Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days.” (Colossians 2:16)

Blessed be God, we have a perpetual Sabbath in the person and work of Christ. See how Paul states this in Hebrews 4:9, “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.” While every other rest is disturbed this rest in Christ remaineth ever the same.

“For we which have believed do enter into rest…” (Hebrews 4:3)

It does not say we have entered into rest, though that is a blessed fact; but, we do enter into rest, or into a keeping of the Sabbath.

What is this Sabbath? “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

When is this Sabbath? On Sunday? Yes, and on any day of the week He is pleased to reveal Himself to us. When He speaks home this precious command to our hearts, we do enter into God’s rest, God’s Sabbath, and we cease from our own works as He did from His. As we enjoy liberty and rest in Christ, the Holy Ghost by the apostle says to us, “Let no man judge you in those things which are a shadow of things to come, for the body is of Christ. Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.” It is a mercy for me to hang upon Christ for life and salvation.

I do miss Brother Scott Richardson and the wisdom God gave him. Wisdom such as the words below:

Before we can worship God in peace of conscience and liberty of heart, we must know, upon authority of God’s Word and by the power of God’s Spirit, that the entire question of sin has been forever settled by the blood of a divine sin offering. All of God’s claims and all our necessities as ruined, guilty sinners have been forever answered. This gives us peace; and in the enjoyment of that peace, we worship God. We have a perfect Sacrifice, and a perfect conscience.

Scott Richardson
