CALL TO WORSHIP

Let me, my Savior and my God,

On Thy free grace rely;

And own ‘tis free because bestowed

On one so lost as I.

Free grace alone can wipe the tears

From my poor weeping eyes,

And raise my soul from guilty fears

To joy that never dies.

Free grace can death itself outbrave,

And take the sting away;

Can sinners to the utmost save,

And give them victory.

(Tune: O God, Our Help in Ages Past p. 10)

BEAUTIFUL

“He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 53:2)

Nothing about the Lord Jesus Christ is beautiful to the natural man. Nothing about the gospel of Christ is beautiful to the natural man because the natural man doesn’t have spiritual eyes to see his need of Christ. The natural man cannot see that Christ is everything we need. But to the believer who has been given eyes to see, the Lord Jesus Christ is altogether lovely. (Song of Solomon 5:16) The grace of Christ is beautiful because the only way a sinner like me can be saved is by grace. The righteousness of Christ is beautiful because the only righteousness I have is Christ and He gives His righteousness to me freely. The love of Christ is beautiful because He can love a sinner like me. The gospel of Christ is beautiful because it reveals Christ to my heart. The faithfulness of Christ is beautiful because it is the only way a weak sinner like me can be kept. I say with Solomon, this is my beloved. He is altogether lovely!

Pastor

In election the Lord set us apart to be His children. In adoption He gave us the relationship of children. In regeneration He gave us the privilege of being His children. In justification He gave us the perfect standing of children. In glorification He will give us the inheritance of children.

What do I have to fear?

I was at a leadership retreat a few days ago. The instructor had taken us through various activities and exercises when we came to the conclusion of our session. The final discussion would be based on this prompt, “What fears do you have for the future”? After a few minutes of reflection, my peers began describing their fears. Each of which was more dire than the instructor had anticipated. Fears for their family and home. Fears for this nation. Fears of leading an unsatisfied and unaccomplished life. Fears for the upcoming election. Fears of hardships and trials. The instructor struggled as he tried to comfort and console my classmates and was ultimately unsuccessful.

As I sat there, this thought struck me, “What do I have to fear”? What does one of God’s sheep have to fear? Regarding my family and home, Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it (Psalms 127:1). Regarding this nation, Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain (Psalms 127:1). Regarding an unsatisfied and unaccomplished life, Be content with such things as ye have: for He [The Lord] hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5). Regarding the upcoming election, The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will (Proverbs 21:1). Regarding hardships and trials, Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness (Isaiah 41:10). What about other things I don’t even know I should be afraid of? What about everything else in this life? (Romans 8:28) And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

I ask again, what do I have to fear? Swift cometh this reply:

Isaiah 43: 1-7

But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honorable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west; I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
