Pastor's message - July 2021

Dominating themes are often a distraction creating a diversion of questionable reliability. A fear of Covid infection has in some ways lessened a healthy fear of God and hides the bigger picture. When the rain fell in Noah’s day it was not initially associated by many with the judgement of God but God used the natural elements to fulfil His purposes quietly and methodically bringing all things together to extend and enforce His sovereign intentions. Whether we are aware or not our interest in God or His work is not a gauge nor is it an indication of His interest in us. Busyness, carelessness, restlessness, or stubbornness are not acceptable impediments to the responsibilities of our interaction with a Holy God.

The wise King Solomon warns us that to observe the only way to genuine wisdom in a foolish world is by holding a healthy respect and genuine reference for the God who created us and made provision to redeem us. Agitated aspirations may well curtail an enthusiastic response of obedience to the designs of God and therefore render the measure of our confidence and assurance less than convincing to our disturbed heart. Worry and anxiety torment the mind plagued with restricted submission. The distraction of a personal inner conflict can rob us of the rich rewards of unbroken fellowship with God. It is to be observed that Paul’s advice and exhortation is for us to serve the Lord without distraction. No rivals in our affections, no restrictions in our service, and no resistance in our surrender.

As we delight ourselves in the Lord He will become our focus and the centre of our attention enlightening our mind and encouraging our heart in order that distraction or disturbance become less confronting and therefore less threatening to our spiritual existence and enjoyment. Keeping our eyes firmly fixed on Jesus we must lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets us, deliberately resisting the devil and his concerted assault upon the peaceful solace of our heart and with strong resolve maintain a dedicated vigil over our soul determined to set our mind only on those things which are above so that in all things, and at all times, in our lives and in our devotion, Christ may have the preeminence.
