“SAVED FROM MY ENEMIES” --Ps 18:1-24

“I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised;

so shall I be saved from my enemies.” vs3

There is salvation by calling upon the name of the Lord, which is looking to Him to do it [vs1-6]. The enemies cannot defeat us, though they can bring us down. Saul can persecute David, but he can’t deny him the throne. Sin may trouble, but its dominion has been broken. The Lord is a strong tower and a mighty refuge. He’s where we go in trouble.

His promises are good, and so is His blood and strength. He is able to save, and He will, because He ever lives to intercede [Heb 7:25]. We have access to God by faith, and He’ll give us the Comforter and the Helper. He’ll advocate for us in our sins [1 John 2:2].

The believer is safe because of God, even in trouble. He’ll deliver from the pit of corruption. Don’t let your fear, temptations, or struggles win. Don’t let disappointment rule you. Cry out to the Lord. Go to Him in your bibles and prayer meetings. Look to the Lord.

Secondly, David describes God coming to defend him [vs7-18].

“The LORD thundered from heaven;

the voice of the Most High resounded—

hailstones and coals of fire.

He shot His arrows and scattered the foes;

He hurled lightning and routed them.

The channels of the sea appeared,

and the foundations of the world were exposed,

at Your rebuke, O LORD,

at the blast of the breath of Your nostrils.” vs13-15

The earth moved and the heavens shook. God comes down as a Mighty Warrior! He’s not a feeble helper offering well-wishes. He is the indisputable God, the Sovereign of the universe, the One before whom all things must bow. He is mighty to save, and He will do it, so the help is real!

Bless God. We are not just praying to a friend, but the Friend of friends who is able. He can relieve. He gives peace. He gives power. He destroys the burden. He changes the situation or gives us peace in the storm. He walks on water and brings us to shore safely [John 6:19-21]. He gives bread to the hungry and satisfaction to the tempted. He makes even our enemies to be at peace [Prov 16:7].

Trust Him and wait. In due time, He will come. Call upon Him day after day, and then suddenly, He may change the problem!

Finally, blessed are the pure in heart [vs19-24].

“Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His sight.” vs24

We see God, because He delights in us. He sees us trusting and the fruit of our faith.

To Abraham, He said,

“By Myself I have sworns, says the Lord, because you have done this thing [offered up your son Isaac,] and have not withheld your son, your only--blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” --Gen 22:15-18

We are justified by faith (imputed with righteousness,) then the deeds of faith are blessed by God. When you are sincere in heart and walk uprightly, the Lord sees you and rewards you. He sees your integrity and rewards you with peace. He sees your faith and produces fruit [Mark 2:5]. He sees you suffering faithfully and gives you more of the Spirit! You and I cannot lose in the bargain!

David waited twenty years under Saul’s persecution, but eventually the tormentor died, and he got the kingdom. Brothers, your persecutors will not last forever. What is done in secret is open. He cannot reward unrighteousness - not with His presence and purity of conscience. He withdraws from the afflictor and draws near the tormented. He sees what is done in darkness.

Never think that our reward is with man. We have One on the throne, and He does right. This greatly encourages us to sincerity, purifying our motives by His grace. He sees, and He will exalt the humble. We cannot serve Him in vain.

Be pure, cleanse your heart, ask if there’s an evil way in you. David said,

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my concerns.

See if there is any offensive way in me;

lead me in the way everlasting.” Ps 139:23-24

Repent and keep going, when you find transgressions, but don’t do anything to appear righteous before men. Please God, and He’ll reward you openly [Matt 6:1-18].
