Lovers of Their Own Selves

I heard a lady on the television say that men and women need to learn how to love themselves. I actually think that’s the problem today! Men and women love themselves too much. They are “lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 3:2-4) There is a popular song that claims, “That learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.” That seems a bit ironic when the Lord Himself said that the greatest of all commandments was/is to “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all they soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.” (Matthew 12:30) Dear sinner, if we love Him like that, there will be no room left for any love for us! And we love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19) – David Eddmenson

What We Say To Our Children

We have all heard the phrase.... "Actions speak louder than words." That is another way of saying with James, "Show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works." It is our works, our actions that prove whether or not we believe what we say. Truly, actions speak louder than words! We say to our children that the worship of God is more important than anything else! We teach them that Christ is present during public worship, and emphasize how important public worship is. But what do our actions say when we allow ourselves and our families to miss public worship? We say by our actions that we really do not believe what we say we do. We tell our children that it is really not that important to us. What is so tragic about this is, in all likelihood, it will not be that important to them either. Children usually take the actions of their parents a step farther! -- Todd Nibert

When we look to people or things (for happiness, need, comfort) rather than God, God will either take them away, that we may make Him the only strength of our heart, and our portion forever, or, if He leaves them, He will take away the comfort of them, and render them our rebukes; for whatever or whoever we make the means of our forsaking or forgetting God, God will make them the instrument of chastising us. We may therefore often read our sin in our sufferings. – William Jay

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” -Acts 2:42

If we have true fellowship with one another, it is because we worship the true and living God together (1 John 1:3). If we truly break bread together, it is because we are made of the same bread and body (1 Cor 10:17). If we truly pray together, it is because Christ has made us of one accord (Acts 1:14).

It is a great privilege for brethren to worship together, talk to one another about our Master, observe the Lords Table together, eat together, and pray together. May we always be reminded of the cause of all our “spiritual blessings in heavenly places, IN CHRIST.” -- Kevin Thacker

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” - Philippians 2:13

Everything concerning a sinner’s salvation is of God. Nothing is of us. We don’t begin the work of salvation, He does (Phil. 1:6). We don’t perform the work of salvation, He does (Phil. 1:6). We don’t finish the work of salvation, He does (John 19:30, Heb. 1:3). We don’t call on Him, He calls us (Luke 5:32). We don’t seek Him, He seeks us (Luke 19:10). We don’t find Him, He finds us (Luke 15:3-6). We don’t accept Him, He accepts us (Eph. 1:6). We don’t produce our own faith to believe on Him, He puts His own faith in us and causes us to believe on Him (Eph. 2:8). We don’t earn any perfection of our own, He earned it for us (Titus 3:5). It’s not that we loved Him, but that He loved us (1 John 4;10). We don’t keep ourselves in His love, He keeps us there (1 Peter 1:3-5). Salvation is totally of the Lord (Jonah 2:9). Gabe Stalnaker
