Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice?Proverbs 8:1
Wisdom always proclaims the glory of God. Even in the gentle whisper of a breeze, the wisdom and understanding of God’s creation raises her voice and speaks volumes. We may acknowledge that God is wise, but our minds are too small, too finite, to fully comprehend that God Himself is wisdom, for He is all-wise. The greatest embodiment and the highest summit of God’s wisdom is in the person and the work of Jesus Christ. Unto the unsaved, the wisdom of Jesus calls unto sinners: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28). Since His atoning death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven, the wisdom of Christ continues to call souls, via the Holy Spirit. While He sojourned upon the earth as perfect Man, the Lord Jesus spoke by the power of the Spirit (2 Sam 23:2); now that He sits upon David’s throne and has sent the Holy Spirit to indwell His people, the Spirit speaks of Jesus (John 15:26). His wisdom still calls unto us, but from within. It is by Christ’s voice of understanding, testifying to our souls that we recognize we lack wisdom and must therefore ask of Him; and when we ask, the Lord will give us wisdom generously, without reserve or reproach (Jas 1:5). There are two types of ears that do not hear wisdom’s call: (1) the reprobate unbeliever, whose ears are uncircumcised, having hearts that resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51), and; (2) the believer who grieves or quenches the Holy Spirit (Eph 4:30; 1 Thess 5:19). We fail to hear wisdom calling us when we backslide in some idolatrous weakness, setting something, anything, as equal or greater in value than the person and work of Jesus Christ (1 Jn 2:16). It will typically occur when we forsake some of our basic disciplines. We fail to pray, forsaking communion with Christ; or fail to read the Word, forsaking the knowledge of Christ; etc. When we hear the call of Christ’s wisdom, however, we reign with Him and rule justly in His name (Prov 8:15); we love Christ more purely and seek Him more diligently (Prov 8:17); and Christ Himself becomes our true inheritance, for Jesus is the Treasure of heaven (Prov 8:21).
