Psalm 130 - Learning to Wait on the Lord

As we climb the next step in our journey to spiritual victory we see the psalmist facing a problem in his life! Life's problems can dominate our thinking, plague us with worry and anxiety, and overall render us useless spiritually. One of the things the saints must learn, in order to live victoriously, is how to successfully deal with problems of life, of which many are sin related. That's where the psalmist finds himself, not his sins, but Israel's (v8)! Perhaps you have found yourself in the same situation, troubled over a son or daughter's, a sibling's, or a parent's sin to the point of anxiety and worry, and it has or is robbing you of living the victorious Christian life. What do you do? How do you keep this from hindering you spiritually? Let's consider the psalmist. What did he do?

1. He, in the depths of despair, did not forsake prayer (v1). He knew he must continue to seek the Lord's help regarding his problems regardless of how hopeless they appeared.

2. In his prayer he recognizes there is help with the Lord (vs 4,7-8)

But I think the focus of this psalm, and where most saints fail can be found in verses 5 - 6. In these two verses we see the word "wait" and "waiteth" three times. In fact, the word "hope" carries an implied message of waiting as well. The psalmist's strategy for dealing with his problem was to pray and wait on the Lord. Many of us can pray when troubles come, but we struggle with waiting on the Lord. Waiting on Him is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks we face as believers. If we are not careful we will become impatient on the Lord and jump ahead of Him, just as Saul did in I Samuel 13.

I am convinced to live victoriously, that once we have taken our problems to the Lord, we must learn the difficult task of waiting on Him to take care of them. We must never forget what the prophet Isaiah taught us.

Isaiah 55.8-9 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Our Lord has His own ways and thoughts regarding the solution to your problem. He may not solve it your way or on your schedule, but His plan is so much better than your thoughts or plans!

So let's live victoriously, and just wait on the LORD.
