A Christian Perspective on Taking Medication for Mental Illness
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2018

We would all agree that sickness and disease is a result of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. We readily agree that is true with regard to physical sickness, but some are prone to believe that mental illness is solely the fault of the individual, or parenting, etc. However, why is it that some believe that the brain would not be affected by the fall? The fact is there is a proven genetic link between mental illness and genetics in many cases.

Fortunately, we will in a day where there are effective treatments for mental illnesses. So if you or someone you love is afflicted with mental illness or a mood disorder, they should find a good psychiatrist (a Christian one if possible) and accept medical treatment for the disorder. One reason I say so is because we are commanded to be of sound mind. Romans 12:3 says, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” One symptom of mania is “to think of himself more highly than he ought.” The command to “think soberly” (sophroneo) means “to be of sound mind,” and “to curb one’s passions,” which adversely affect soundness of mind; to exercise self-control. This word is used in 2 Cor. 5:13, “For if we are beside ourselves (perceived as mentally ill), it is for God; or if we are of sound mind, it is for you.” This same command to be of sound mind is found in Titus 2:6, “Likewise exhort the young men to be sober-minded.” 1 Peter 4:7 says, “Now the end of all things is near; therefore, be clear-headed and disciplined for prayer” (HCSB). Finally, Titus 2:12 says “denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly (sophronos), righteously, and godly in the present age.” Some mental illnesses like mania lead to “ungodliness and worldly lusts,” and prevent the person from living “righteously and godly.” So if it takes medication to be “clear-headed” or of sound mind, then by all means do it!

Granted, medication should not be the first step in treating a physical or mental illness. Medicines have side effects and sometimes can make things worse. We should first try changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and so forth. In the case of mental illness or mood disorders, see if counseling or psychotherapy can be beneficial. Follow suggestions for promoting and maintaining good mental health. But if healing does not come through those means, find the best medication that will keep you of sound mind, and thank God it is available. I have personally witness how effective these medications can be.
