John on the Bottom Shelf
An Exposition of the Gospel of John for Children Chapter 36: Jinx!
(John 13:18-30)
“Jinx!” is something people say when they realize they have just said the same thing. For example, suppose you and your friends are thinking of what movie to watch and at the same time you both say “Frozen!”, somebody would then say “Jinx!” Speaking of Frozen do you remember why Han’s and Anna connected so well? Han’s was telling Anna how his brothers used to pretend that he was invisible. Then Anna tells Han’s how Elsa has always shut her out. And suddenly they both realize the have felt the same thing and they even start singing a song about it. Here’s a few lines from it “All my life has been a series of doors in my face. And then suddenly I bump into you. I was thinking the same thing!” Then again “I mean it's crazy…What? We finish each other’s-Sandwiches! That's what I was gonna say! I've never met someone-Who thinks so much like me! Jinx! Jinx again! Our mental synchronization. Can have but one explanation. You-And I-Were-Just-Meant to be!” So the reason they connected so well was because they had thought and felt the same things.
Well “Jinx!” is the one word that describes the story of Jesus we find in (John 13:18-30). How so? It describes a time when Jesus was betrayed by one of his best friends, Judas. Maybe you have been hurt by one of your close friends before? Well if so do you know what Jesus could say to you? “Jinx!” because so has He! And this is why you can connect with Jesus so well, because He has felt all the sadness you have felt, He knows what it’s like to be human, He was a real Man. In fact, He became so human and entered into what it means to be a human so much that He is now part of the human race! (see Hebrews 4:15-16) So that’s what you and I should do, we should come to Him, we should hope in Him, because He knows what we feel. And that has only one explanation, you and Him were meant to be together, He was meant to be your friend, your very best friend. So come to Him…Amen.
