Psalm 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. From our text we see the need to build, the inability to do so, and the only One who can build, the LORD. Therefore we know the psalmist is talking about spiritual building. I want to "chase a rabbit" for a moment and consider true spiritual building. There are many who feel they are building for the Lord, but are not! They are deceived! What does the Bible have to say about this most important subject?
1. There is a time to build, and by implication a time not to build! (Ecclesiastes 3.3)
2. There is only one true builder, but He uses many laborers in His building. (our text verse)
3. Many times preliminary work is required before beginning to build. (Neh 4.10)
4. Godly building many times occurs at a much slower pace than "man centered" building. In fact, many times true spiritual building requires a downward work before building upward. (Matthew 7:24-26). The man who bulit upon the rock had to dig down to rock level before building up.
5. True spiritual building cannot be built upon anything, but Christ. (I Co 3:11)
Never forget, building on anything other than Christ is not spiritual building at all!
6. The right materials must be used for Godly building. (I Co 3.12-13)
7. Once complete, a godly building must be maintained! (Ecclesiastes 10:18)
Are you really building for the Lord, or are you just deceiving yourself with vain labor?
Until next time God bless.
