I Thessalonians 1:4
Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
It seems that there are an increasing number of people who hear the doctrine of election and become deeply concerned with whether or not they are one of God’s elect. That is not the issue. The issue, is are you trusting in Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin and the imputation of perfect righteousness?
Do you think that the woman with the issue of blood who crawled to the Lord Jesus, hoping to touch but the hem of His garment, was wondering whether or not she was one of God’s elect? No! She touched Christ and was made whole. That proved that she was chosen of God before the foundation of the world. Do you think that the dying thief on Calvary’s cross was concerned with whether or not he was chosen and elected of God before time ever was? No! He simply said, “Lord remember me when you come into your kingdom,” and that was the result of his election.
What hungry man would hesitate and say, “I wonder if it is the will and purpose of God that I should eat? If he is hungry, he will eat. What weary man would say, “I wonder if it is the predestinated purpose of God for me to sleep?” There are none that I know of, for a man that is tired and weary will simply fall to sleep. Sleeping and eating come as natural to us as believing God ought to. Yet, being spiritually dead, we must first be given life in order to partake of the Bread of Life and the Water of Life, which is Jesus Christ. It is then that the sinner realizes that God chose them unto salvation before the world was ever made! Will folks ever learn that election shuts no one out of heaven’s glory? Actually, it is what shuts them in!
