CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune – Send the Light – p. 424)

There’s a Savior sent to save His sheep from sin;

Christ is all; Christ is all.

He has come to ransom and to bring them in;

Christ is all; Christ is all.

REFRAIN: Christ is all, our only sacrifice,

He has paid our debt in full;

Christ is all, our pearl of greatest price,

All to Him of love we owe.

Let us sing His praises for His cleansing blood;

Christ is all; Christ is all.

He our Great High Priest in our place He stood;

Christ is all; Christ is all.

By almighty power He has set us free;

Christ is all; Christ is all.

For His righteousness is all our hope and plea;

Christ is all; Christ is all.

We are saved out and out at once and wholly by what the Lord Jesus Christ has done, without ourselves having a hand in it. Outside of us is the blood that cleanses from all sin. Outside of us is the obedience which fulfills the law, earns our salvation, and cries, "IT IS FINISHED." OUTSIDE! We have only to look on Christ to be saved.

--George Bishop

WHEREIN SHALL IT BE KNOWN?

For wherein shall it be known here that I and Thy people have found grace in Thy sight? is it not in that Thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and Thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.” (Exodus 33:16)

This is what Moses asked the Lord, and is it not the question of every true child of God? How can it be known that we and all the people of God have found grace in God’s sight? The answer is that the Lord God goes with us. But how can we know that God is truly with us and goes with us to save us and keep us by His grace? Is it not as we believe and rest in, look and cling to His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ Whose name is “Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, GOD WITH US” (Matt. 1:23)? Did not God tell Moses and the people of Israel in the Law that He would meet with them and commune with them “from above the mercy seat” above the ark where the blood of the lamb was sprinkled by the high priest to atone for the sins of the people (Exod. 25:22)? And who is our Mercy-seat? It is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Who is the Word “made flesh” to dwell among us (John 1:14). In and by the Lord Jesus Christ God is reconciled to us and we are reconciled to God based on His righteousness imputed to us and by which God’s grace reigns unto eternal life (2 Cor. 5:19-21). In and by Christ we have the ever-presence of the fulness of the Godhead by which we are made complete (Col. 2:9-10). By the blood of Christ we have free access to the holiest of all, the very presence of God (Heb. 10:19). Can we not understand that this is what separates (sanctifies) us “from all the people that are upon the face of the earth”? It is not the religion of “touch not; taste not; handle not” that separates us from the world (Col. 2:19-23). It is God’s grace that saves us by Christ, brings us to look to and believe in Christ, and keeps us clinging to Christ all the days of our lives. – Pastor Bill Parker

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works” (Hebrews 10:24).

HOW CAN MY WORKS BE GOOD WORKS?

I am a follower of the Lamb, a believer on the Lord Jesus Christ. As a result of the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit Who taught me “the Word of Truth,” I have renounced every false way and turned to Christ for my salvation, righteousness and everlasting life. While I am indeed saved by free and sovereign grace, nevertheless I remain a sinner, and my sinfulness is sadly realized and acknowledged even in my worship and service to the Lord. As John Newton said, “Sin is mixed with all I do.” When I look at my faith, I weep over the unbelief of it. When I examine my prayers, there is so much coldness in them. When I read the Scriptures, my mind frequently wanders. When I gather with others to worship, I am easily distracted. My efforts to honor God are stained with inward corruption. I want to love the Lord with all my heart and love you as I ought, but my love only vaguely resembles what it should be. Since vileness mars my best intentions, I ask – How could God ever consider my works to be good and acceptable when I know they are all polluted by sin?

It is written, “And it shall be upon Aaron’s forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD” (Exodus 28:38). Aaron, a type of Christ, was the high priest of Israel. Fastened to the mitre (turban) which he wore was a plate of pure gold with this engraving, “HOLINESS TO THE LORD.” Though our “holy things,” and “holy gifts,” prayers, worship, service, etc., are indeed tainted with iniquity, Christ is our holiness. He is ever and always consecrated to the Lord, and He has already paid for, not only the “iniquity of the holy things,” but for all the sins of His people. Thank God for the Savior and His work on the cross which is perpetually effectual before God. It is because of His blood and righteousness that this sinner and my pitiful efforts to serve Him are made pleasing to God. As I am “accepted in the Beloved” (Ephesians 1:6), so my works, worship and service are “accepted in the Beloved.”“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 2:5). —Pastor Jim Byrd
