This resolution of Daily United Prayer is based on An Humble Attempt, originally put forward by Jonathan Edwards in 1748. Its design is to encourage God's people in the duty of united extraordinary prayer; setting aside some time every day to pray for the revival of His church and the advancement of Christ's kingdom in our homes, in our churches, in our nation, and in the world.
The family and I have been taking a short break out of town for the last few days. Yesterday morning, I enjoyed taking a long walk on the beach though it was quite overcast and foggy. For some reason, whenever I walk along the beach it always seems to bring to mind a vivid picture of LIFE itself and the passage of time. We have these momentary brushes with various people that we meet along life's journey and we have the ever-present reality of the ocean of eternity right by our side no matter where we find ourselves along the beach of time. The misty morning actually heightened the sense that just as I was only able to make out the vague forms and shapes of people ahead of me, so it is with the uncertainties of what lies ahead as we stand on the threshold of a new year. A new year is upon us, friends, and eternity is always looming by our side. When I think of those that we have lost in our praying group this year, it makes me wonder what this next year will hold for us. We can make our plans, but we have no idea, really, what to expect in 2022.
Interestingly, not only is today the final day of 2021, but today is also DAY 365 of our JOINT RESOLUTION OF UNITED PRAYER. It's hard to believe that we are still here, and we are still praying together. This can only be attributed to the sustaining grace of God, can it not? Of course, some days are harder than others, but overall, it is a remarkable thing that the fires still seem to be burning. Even as I write this email, I am sitting beside a large fireplace with no one around me. I love an open fire as it gives me great comfort. The same is so true in the spiritual realm. The rest of the household may be asleep, but as long as the fires remain bright and burning, we can keep praying indefinitely.
Having said all that, I want to make sure to say that if you wish to un-subscribe from this email list at any time, please do not feel badly about doing so. It is not for everyone, I understand. I actually thought about just clearing the list in order to avoid any potential embarrassment of requesting to unsubscribe, but I'll try this route first.
There are a number of new folks that have been introduced to our prayer time recently and I want to encourage you to watch this video to help you understand what the primary focus and burden of this prayer group is. In short, this prayer meeting does not exist merely to run through a list of temporal needs (though we don't discourage praying for needs). But it’s a prayer meeting set apart to focus on the bigger kingdom desire to see God’s name made great in the nations (Malachi 1:11). In a word, we are praying for revival—the revival of religion and the advancement of Christ's kingdom on earth. Let's be sure to keep that at the forefront of our praying, please.
For those that are available and able, we will be taking some additional time today beginning at 11pm EST to PRAY IN the new year. We will continue until around 1am EST. I want to stress that this is not to take the place of any local prayer meeting or gathering you may be asked to join. This is simply for those that are available to gather with this particular group to call upon God specifically for His working in 2022. Join us only as you are able.
