Prominent Democrats are giving a new spin to the “defund the police” movement currently gaining traction on the political left, stating that they don’t really want to dismantle local police systems — just give them a “reimagining” or “transformation.”House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Congress’ proposals to rein in law enforcement in the aftermath of Geoge Floyd’s death would not include the defunding of police.
“I would simply say, as I have always said, nobody is going to defund the police,” Clyburn said Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.
“We can restructure the police forces, restructure, reimagine policing,” he added. “That is what we are going to do. The fact of the matter is, the police have a role to play. What we have got to do is make sure that their role is one that meets the times, one that responds to these communities that they operate in.” ...
