Measles outbreak kills more than 1,200 in Madagascar
Babies wail as a nurse tries to reassure mothers who have come to vaccinate their children against a measles outbreak that has killed more than 1,200 people in this island nation where many are desperately poor.

Madagascar faces its largest measles outbreak in history, with cases soaring well beyond 115,000, but resistance to vaccinating children is not the driving force behind the rise.

Measles cases are rising in the United States and elsewhere, in part because of misinformation that makes some parents balk at receiving a vaccine. New York City is trying to halt an outbreak by ordering mandatory vaccinations in one Brooklyn neighborhood.

In Madagascar, many parents want to protect their children but face immense challenges, including the lack of resources. ...

"Sixty-two children in Samoa have died from measles. After a mass-vaccination campaign, authorities are hopeful the spread of the highly contagious virus has been contained, but remain on edge. How did it come to this?" (Anatomy of an epidemic: How measles took hold of Samoa)

Samoa's Government says immunisation against measles has reached 89 per cent coverage of the Pacific island's population, as it faces a deadly epidemic of the infectious disease.

Key points:
•Samoa and the UN are appealing for financial assistance to battle and recover from the epidemic

•Of those who have died during the crisis, 57 were children under the age of four

•Rising rates of measles globally have been blamed on misinformation from anti-vaxxerers [❗]

...: Samoa charges anti-vaxxer with incitement as country battles deadly measles outbreak | ABC News

Measles cases are rising worldwide, even in wealthy nations such as Germany and the United States, as parents shun immunisation for philosophical or religious reasons, or fears, debunked by doctors, that such vaccines could cause autism.

The World Health Organisation said this week that measles infected almost 10 million people last year, killing 140,000 — mostly children.

The picture for 2019 is even worse, it said, with provisional data up to November showing a three-fold increase in case numbers compared with the same period in 2018.

What can I say? Last week I told my friends that all sickness and death is as a result of sin.

Measles is a virus that comes and goes. US mortality rate is low because of our infrastructure. We have an excellent sewage system and excellent nutrition. That has been a huge contributing factor. If you notice 3rd world countries have problems with these viruses cause they lack the cleanliness and nutrition of the West. Vaccines help, but you can't overlook these facts. Also we have access to OTC meds to ease the symptoms as the virus runs it's course. I find it strange to call viruses diseases. Is the common cold a disease? Influenza? Me tinks their is a bit of inflating the condition to get people to vaccinate for a virus that runs it's course and has an extremely low mortality rate in the US. Same for chicken pox. If you want the vaccine get it. If you don't them don't. There are some ethically produced vaccines like Shingex. Ask your medical professional about ethical vaccines.

Be thankful you live in a rich country like the United States, what are some of the problems mentioned in the article are much less of a factor in our country. Many of these vaccinations for most of these childhood diseases are nearly instantly available in this country!
World Health Organization wrote:
There is arguably no single preventive health intervention more cost-effective than immunization. Time and again, the international community has endorsed the value of vaccines and immunization to prevent and control a large number of infectious diseases and, increasingly, several chronic diseases that are caused by infectious agents....

SA, picked an informative article on what is happening in Madagascar.👍

The article brings the meaning of the old saying, "Closing the barn door after the horse is out," to its fullest tragic meaning.
