2/3's Americans Believe Cohabitation Before Marriage is Good

Nearly two-thirds of American adults believe it's a good idea to live with one's significant other before they get married as they see it as a rite of passage, according to a new report by The Barna Group.

The report, called Barna Trends 2017, shows that 65 percent of American adults say cohabitation is a good idea, compared to 35 percent who believe it's not a good thing. And 57 percent say they either currently or have previously lived with their boyfriend or girlfriend.

Couples like to live together not just for convenience or cost-saving, but almost all adults see it as a rite of passage in the path to marriage, the study says. As many as 84 percent say the major reason for cohabitation is to test compatibility, while 62 percent say it did not reduce or increase the pressure to get married. That excerpt, Jim, is intellectual garbage, it is vague, not true, uses generalizations, the whole article is filled with false assumptions, not a lot of documentation if I recall, straw mans, and is a mess.

I don't know who Phil Johnson is, sounds like the old coach for the Lakers, so I'll reserve judgment on him, I will say that I'm not trying to fix America's moral problem, that's not my goal, as a disciple of Jesus, my desire is that God would be glorified, and that His Son's name would be known among the heathen, that His Spirit would convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

In the material I pass out that could be labeled, "pro life material" it has the gospel, shouldn't all disciples of Jesus desire that His church be built?

I think this shows you how far the US culture has strayed from any notion of what the Bible teaches, though it does not surprise me that Barna is the source of this study. Maybe no college sociology department is interested in doing it.
Barna's studies usually show negative things for the organized church, which may be why he wrote a book about a revolution in how churches are organizing.
I do not blame the messenger because I think the study is right. It is like a headwind into which the traditional teachings of chastity and purity have to go. Dave Ramsey, Christian financial advisor and the third highest rated talk show host in the US, speaks against this every time he runs across it. Who knows if it makes any difference--after all, if you can get the milk for free, why pay for the cow? So people will do whatever they want, despite his advice.
Another aspect of this is the decreasing value young people place on sexual purity, but some could argue--with all the divorce out there, no wonder they do not have faith in the value of marriage, a piece of paper notarized by some govt official?

You can't have it both ways Jim L, you cannot push your liberal left agenda, then quote P. Johnson, as though he and JM were Christ Himself. I wonder if you ever think for yourself or study God's word for yourself? It would appear not.

Most know there's no difference in political parties, yet you try to distinguish between them as if there were. Too bad your zeal is misplaced - on the things of man and not the things of God.
Remember what Christ stated, 'Ye must be born again'.

Many of us, me included, often note the immorality of homosexual relationships, but fail to see the heterosexual immorality that is all around us. We have become hardened to it. We should speak out against all immorality - period.

The more out of wedlock sex; the more venereal diseases and of course more abortions, single moms, etc.

We live in a sick world!

Solid Christian marriages are built on commitment, not compatibility. Commitment to God and commitment to each other. Anything else is inferior, fragile and prone to breakage. Never enter a marriage with the idea that divorce is a option.

Sacraments are NOT taught in the Bible. The Catholic Church is infamous for their unscriptural Seven Sacraments, which they mandate for salvation in the Catholic faith. If you don't perform these Sacrament in the Catholic religion, then you cannot go to Heaven according to Catholic heresies.

Every marriage I know where the Bride and Groom abstained from sleeping together lasted, and those that took the test ride often didn't. They like the test rides more than marriage

That's why I like the RCCs position, and makes marriage a sacrament. I don't know if sacrament should be the right word, but too many Protestants treat marriage without the honour it deserves

We wanted a pure relationship and didnt want to take any chances.........Do we have regrets.....Not one. Were we extreme? I dont think so. When we say avoid the appearance of evil we are saying it to other Christians, the rest of the culture doesn't care. People cohabitate because they don't want to commit, which is foundational to marriage. The compatibility testing is an excuse, and doesn't work anyway, as the number of divorces are increasing even as does pre-marital cohabitation.
