Andy Stanley: 'Christianity Doesn’t Hinge’ on Jesus’ Birth

Megachurch pastor Andy Stanley became the subject of controversy after he said that Jesus’ birth is not as important to Christianity as His resurrection.

While preaching earlier this month about Christmas, the pastor of North Point Community Church said he wouldn’t be too concerned about how a person was born if that person could accurately predict his own death and resurrection.

“If somebody can predict their own death and their own resurrection, I’m not all that concerned about how they got into the world, because the whole resurrection thing is so amazing,” he said in a Dec. 4 sermon entitled ‘Who Needs Christmas.’

“Christianity doesn’t hinge on the truth or even the stories around the birth of Jesus. It really hinges on the resurrection of Jesus,” he added. ...

Thanks John, but have you considered that they may have been in error? I'm sure you love/loved them, but you have the chance to break that cycle and do it right from the start, knowing what you know. Do you really still plan on having children? They deserve to be taught about Christ the right way.
Yes I still plan on having children when I get married because having children is part of marriage. And the children will be taught the Evangelical Protestant doctrine of salvation when they reach the age of reason by watching that 4 VHS box set of Billy Graham Crusades. The children will be raised Catholic since I have no intention of ever officially becoming Baptist.

Really John? You're too intelligent not to know how incredibly odd that sounds, not to mention, confusing for the kids. Don't you think they'd ask, "Hey dad, why in the world didn't you just tell us the truth from the start"?
Why in the world wait until they're preteens, after willfully allowing them to be polluted for all of those years?
My Catholic parents raised me Catholic and I also watched the Billy Graham Crusades on television when I was growing up and I learned the Evangelical Protestant doctrine of salvation but I did not think that my parents confused me at all by raising me Catholic and then having me learn the Evangelical Protestant doctrine of salvation on the Billy Graham Crusades.

Kev, If I am going to remain Catholic then when I have children then they have to be raised Catholic. I do know the difference between some of the Catholic errors.

Hi SC, haven't seen you around much. Hope things are good.
Yes, and striking was a good choice of words, along with, astonishing, curious, say what?, and, huh? : )
I'll be interested in hearing John's logic on it
Yes, correcting anything opposed to God's Word is always a good thing...

Are you going to find that 18 year old Catholic girl where you live now, or in eastern Colorado? Have you checked out the area to make sure there is a Catholic church where you will live? Since you will be on the road with the band, how are you going to make them go to confession? If they confess to a priest, will their sins be forgiven by him?

Christopher and others, even J Y can't believe what he posted...striking contradiction...."they will believe every Catholic doctrine, they will be made to go to Confession 2 times a month and they will be made to be Altar Servers ...while they trust in Christ alone"

He's messing with us.

Trusting in Christ alone (our High Priest) negates the need for faux ones eager to listen to the peoples confessions...as if they could absolve them to begin with.
Clowns.

...and doesn't even J Y say that he doesn't believe every RC doctrine?

J Y appears to be a computer generated devil's advocate. I will say this though...he certainly provides us with ample opportunities for witnessing to lost RCs.

All things work to the good...

So wait you will make sure your kids are raised up in teachings you know are false. What kind on nonsense is that John? I was kind of thinking it was cool you at least knew the difference between some of the Catholic errors but then you make this comment?

Teaching Children false doctrine when you supposedly know better is a grave error John Y

I pray you teach them only what is good and pure and TRUE.

Even Steve should say amen to this! Yet we will see.

Steve sees you as his brother:

James 5:19-20

19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;

20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

Some of these comments remind me of the Star Bellied Sneetches, man alive, flaunt your feathers somewhere else please, I guess, if anything, it shows how easily we can get our eyes off of Christ.

3. Sorry, but this was the point in SC's argument you seemed to miss, and it appeared adequate to bring it to light

4. your position about Christmas

5. not the worship of Christ

3. I been in the forum long enough to know sc's point. I was trying to refocus her thinking. It is an open forum, an individual, other than the moderators, doesn't dictate it contents

4. I have not posted a "position" on "Christmas." sc and you have been talking about a holiday I have never endorsed and a false religion with which I don't concern myself with its daily abominations.

5. It is about you and sc trying to relegate an important aspect about our Lord to simply trivia.

Even Spurgeon who has been shown to be a despiser of the holiday for its Romish roots, because he was a student of Scripture and a lover of his Lord, stated,

"Since it is lawful, and even laudable, to meditate upon the incarnation of the Lord upon any day in the year, it cannot be in the power of other men’s superstitions to render such a meditation improper for to-day. Regarding not the day, let us, nevertheless, give God thanks for the gift of his dear son."

ps BMac, I understand false syllogism, you obviously do not.

Please, spare your time and efforts.
Your rabbit trail was the daily worship of Christ when you were engaged with SC about the validity of Christmas and its date.
It is a fact that conversations develop into different avenues of thought, resulting in topics of enrichment and information.
Have a blessed evening
Feel free to learn about syllogisms if you wish. It is quite useful too, however; but perhaps will not help to clarify any better what has been discussed already at length.
God bless

1. or getting out of topic by related, but not focused, rabbit trails.

2. it is always advisable to avoid pursuing false syllogisms

1. You may need to rethink this. The topic at hand was Andy Stanley's remark on the Incarnation (I have been emphasizing the Incarnation in my posts) and that is pretty much how the discussion thread went until your first post. Then you bring from another thread on the Incarnation your don't try and dissuade me with the facts discussion with sister TMC that had no relationship to this article. In fact, if you look at the news stories posted by SA there are none on whether or not Dec. 25 is the exact date of our Lord's birth, none about whether or not the RCC "Christianized a pagan holiday", and none on the meaning of the mass. My comments are thus in line with the article and it is you and sc that are off on rabbit trails that people have been kind enough to indulge you on.

2. Thankfully, sister B, we live in a day in which the internet provides much helpful data and learning. You could do a web search on the phrase or find a good website on logic. This will help you not make baseless accusations.

I'm not implying that it's all black and white either. I believe God is working on many, I believe there are those who privately disagree with some of the churches doctrines, and I believe there is a lot of ignorance when it comes to much of what the system actually teaches, demands, and ananthematizes, as far as even merely questioning church doctrine, etc. The one sole source of confusion, which serves to easily manipulate, is ignorance of God's Word, which the church has always banked on. We pray for Roman Catholics, while at the same time, hate the system of false doctrine which misleads.
